Why artificial intelligence is changing the role of Chief Compliance Officers in Belgium

AI is expanding the scope of compliance leadership

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of everyday business operations.

Financial institutions are integrating AI into fraud detection, customer onboarding, transaction monitoring, credit assessment, document processing and operational decision-making. At the same time, generative AI is finding its way into functions that were previously considered outside the traditional scope of compliance.

This evolution is changing expectations placed on all leadership positions, like legal leadership, marketing leadership, but also on compliance leaders

Regulatory expertise remains fundamental, but organisations are increasingly looking for executives capable of understanding how emerging technologies influence governance, operational risk and regulatory oversight.

For Chief Compliance Officers, AI represents both a regulatory challenge and a leadership challenge.

Belgium is among Europe's most advanced AI markets

Belgium is adopting artificial intelligence at a faster pace than many of its European neighbours.

According to the Belgian Federal Public Service Economy, 34.5% of Belgian enterprises already use at least one AI technology, placing Belgium among the leading countries in Europe. Adoption rises to more than 76% among large organisations, particularly within knowledge-intensive industries and financial services.

As AI becomes embedded in business processes, governance requirements inevitably become more complex.

Questions relating to transparency, accountability, data quality, third-party providers and human oversight are moving closer to the centre of corporate decision-making.

Regulation is increasingly focused on AI governance

The regulatory landscape continues to evolve alongside technological innovation.

The European AI Act introduces a risk-based framework governing the development and deployment of artificial intelligence systems across the European Union.

For financial institutions operating in Belgium, these requirements complement existing regulatory obligations such as GDPR, AML frameworks, MiFID II, DORA and broader operational resilience expectations.

Rather than treating AI as an isolated technology project, organisations are beginning to integrate AI governance into their existing compliance frameworks.

This requires closer collaboration between Compliance, Risk, Legal, Information Security and Technology teams.

The Chief Compliance Officer increasingly becomes one of the key stakeholders responsible for ensuring that governance evolves at the same pace as innovation.

For compliance functions, these developments create responsibilities that did not exist only a few years ago.

Compliance leadership requires broader capabilities

The traditional responsibilities of Chief Compliance Officers remain unchanged. They continue to oversee regulatory compliance, ethics, financial crime prevention, internal controls and interactions with regulators.

What is changing is the range of topics falling within their remit

AI governance introduces questions around algorithmic accountability, model validation, explainability, third-party AI solutions, data governance and ethical decision-making.

Many of these issues cannot be addressed through legal interpretation alone. They require an understanding of technology, operational processes and organisational change.

Consequently, compliance leaders are expected to facilitate dialogue between technical experts, executive management and regulators while maintaining independent oversight.

The recruitment market is also evolving in Belgium

These developments naturally influence recruitment. Financial institutions continue to value extensive regulatory experience, but increasingly seek candidates capable of operating in highly digital environments.

Experience with AI governance, digital transformation, operational resilience or enterprise-wide risk management is becoming increasingly relevant alongside traditional compliance expertise.

This does not necessarily mean recruiting technology specialists. Rather, organisations are looking for leaders who can ask the right questions, challenge governance frameworks and understand how emerging technologies may influence regulatory exposure.

The combination of regulatory credibility, strategic thinking and technological awareness remains relatively uncommon, making these profiles particularly attractive in today's market.

Competition Extends Beyond Compliance

The same competencies are now sought after across multiple executive functions:

  • Risk Management.
  • Internal Audit.
  • Operational Risk.
  • Data Governance.
  • Technology Governance.
  • Financial Crime.

As organisations build multidisciplinary governance teams around AI, competition for experienced leaders naturally increases.

According to the Belgian High Council for Employment, skills shortages remain one of the principal obstacles to AI adoption, despite the country's strong progress in implementing artificial intelligence across businesses.

This challenge is particularly visible in highly regulated sectors, where technical knowledge must be combined with regulatory expertise and strong leadership capabilities.

Assessing future potential becomes as important as assessing experience

Recruiting senior compliance professionals has always required more than evaluating technical expertise. Today's market adds another dimension.

Boards and executive teams increasingly need to assess how candidates will respond to regulatory developments that are still emerging.

  • Curiosity.
  • Adaptability.
  • Strategic judgement.
  • The ability to work across functions.
  • The capacity to lead organisational change.

These qualities often become as important as sector knowledge or years of experience.

For organisations preparing for AI-driven transformation, recruitment therefore becomes a forward-looking exercise rather than simply replacing an existing executive.

EN FAQ Question #1 How is artificial intelligence changing the role of Chief Compliance Officers in Belgium?
EN FAQ Answer #1

Artificial intelligence is expanding the responsibilities of Chief Compliance Officers beyond traditional regulatory compliance. As organisations deploy AI across financial services, compliance leaders are increasingly involved in AI governance, operational resilience, data governance, third-party risk and the implementation of the EU AI Act. This evolution requires a broader combination of regulatory, technological and strategic expertise.

EN FAQ Question #2What skills are companies looking for when recruiting Chief Compliance Officers in Belgium?
EN FAQ Answer #2

While regulatory expertise remains essential, organisations increasingly seek Chief Compliance Officers with experience in AI governance, digital transformation, operational resilience, enterprise risk management and cross-functional leadership. The ability to work closely with Legal, Risk, Technology and Data teams has become a key differentiator for senior compliance professionals.

EN FAQ Question #3Why is recruiting Chief Compliance Officers becoming more challenging in Belgium?
EN FAQ Answer #3

The growing adoption of artificial intelligence, combined with evolving European regulations such as the AI Act and DORA, has significantly increased demand for experienced compliance leaders. Financial institutions are competing for professionals who combine strong regulatory knowledge with an understanding of emerging technologies, making these profiles increasingly difficult to recruit.

EN FAQ Question #4Why work with a financial services recruitment firm for Compliance leadership roles in Belgium?
EN FAQ Answer #4

Specialist financial services recruitment firms understand the complexity of highly regulated environments and have access to experienced Compliance, Risk and Regulatory Affairs professionals, including passive candidates who may not actively be looking for a new role.
